http://www.NorthSkyCelloEnsemble.com

North Sky Cello ensemble is comprised of four versatile cellists
performing original compositions and arrangements of classical and
contemporary music. The mission of this group is to feature the
breathtaking sonority of the cello quartet in music that spans a huge
range of genres. The members of North Sky are composers, arrangers,
and performers of the highest caliber. As individual artists, they
have performed with some of the most celebrated musicians of the
classical, pop, rock, and jazz worlds. Together, they have recorded a
debut CD that features legendary jazz musician and composer Tom
Harrell on trumpet and drummer Brian Chase from the internationally -
acclaimed rock band the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. These collaborations evoke
a sound world so diverse that the quartet can resemble a big band horn
section in one piece, and the distortion of heavy - metal electric
guitars the next. Through its original compositions and arrangements,
innovative programming, and remarkable collaborations, North Sky Cello
Ensemble creates a landscape in which the cello can transcend its
typical role as a "classical" instrument and claims its rightful place
in the music of now.

Called an “Adventurous Cello Songstress” by Time Out NY, Jody Redhage
plays cello, sings, and composes music for herself as a soloist and
for her chamber group, Fire in July. Musicworks magazine calls her “a
new music dynamo….Redhage is cultivating a growing repertoire of indie
art song that breaches genre boundaries and
makes for stirring listening.” Jody is currently in Esperanza
Spalding’s Chamber Music Society band, touring the world in the
2010-11 season. As a composer, her passion is setting poetry into art
song, and her music pulls from an array of genre influences, including
classical art song, jazz, pop, and rock. She has performed in
Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, the Barbican &
Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco,
Chicago Symphony Hall; and internationally in South Africa, Japan, and
Europe. She has played on the Jay Leno Show, Letterman, Conan
O'Brien, the View, the CBS Early Show, the Today Show, and Jimmy
Kimmel Live, and her own music has often been played on NPR stations,
including a Fire in July feature on "Spinning on Air." Please visit
her website www.jodyredhage.com for info on her CD, “Ancient Star”
featuring all music she wrote for her band Fire in July, and

electro-acoustic release coming out in August: "of minutiae and
memory."

February 28, 2009 |7:00 pm

New York, NY

The New Art Song Concert at Greenwich House on Saturday, February 28, 2009 will offer a bold and disparate group of contemporary composers and performers, all connected by the use of poetry and text in their work. Organized by saxophonist and composer Sam Sadigursky, whose two Words Project releases on New Amsterdam Records have received wide critical acclaim, the concert will feature performances pianist/singer Gabriel Kahane (performing his acclaimed Craigslistlieder), the Frank Carlberg Quintet, the Gregg Kallor Duo (performing a collection of Kallor's settings of Yeats and Dickinson for voice and piano), Sadigursky's The Words Project, and a solo performance of original settings by cellist, singer, and composer Jody Redhage. By working with poems and text, each composer boldly carries on a long lineage of art song, drawing on a wide range of material for their work in order to present a new vision of art song for the 21st century. From classics of the 19th century to modernist and beat poetry, anonymous dating postings on Craigslist to the strangely poetic strains of George W. Bush, each composer combines a myriad of influences, unafraid to cross stylistic boundaries and blur the line between composition and improvisation.

Located in Greenwich House at 46 Barrow Street in the heart of the West Village, the Renee Weiller Recital Hall is an intimate, eighty-seat concert hall which features noted acoustics and a Steinway grand piano.

The concert will begin at 7 PM and space is limited. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the door or in advance through Brown Paper Tickets by visiting http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/52919. Seating is limited and it is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance.
